L1S2 : Traduction version, L1 S2, cours des fondamentaux 

This is an initiation course in translation, going into French. We will work on a variety of texts and genres such as fiction, advertisements, and the press, in order to present some of the obstacles translators come across and to understand some of the processes that are at stake in going from one language to the other. The students will be given translations to do each week.

This course follows on the translation course given in first year, going into English this time. We will work on a variety of texts and genres such as fiction, advertisements, and the press, in order to present some of the obstacles translators come across and to understand some of the processes that are at stake in going from one language to the other.

L3S5 : Traduction et outils numériques - cours des fondamentaux (version/thème)

 

Un cours à choisir parmi les trois cours suivants :

  • 1) L3S5 : Traduire le théâtre, cours des fondamentaux

What does translating for the theater involve ? Why can translating a play be seen as a first instance of its staging ? Translating from English into French and conversely, we will look into the specificity of drama translation, dealing with issues linked to adaptation, historical and cultural allusions, style, and the actors’ bodies and voices. We will mostly be working on scenes from 19th to 21st century plays. Students will be encouraged to go and see at least one translated play in the course of the semester.

Comment s’assurer que traduire le théâtre, c’est bien traduire pour le théâtre ? Pourquoi peut-on dire qu’une traduction constitue une première ébauche de mise en scène ? On abordera la spécificité de la traduction théâtrale, avec la question de l’adaptation des allusions historiques et culturelles, des problèmes de style et de prosodie, et ceux de la gestuelle et de la dimension scénique du texte. On travaillera la traduction dans les deux langues, de l’anglais vers le français et inversement, à partir d’extraits de pièces du 19ème au 21ème siècle, pour la plupart. NB : On encouragera les étudiants à aller voir au moins une pièce (jouée en traduction) au cours du semestre.

  • 2) L3S5 : Traduction (thème et version) textes XXe et XXIe siècles

This course, taught by two teachers, is addressed prioritarily - though not exclusively - to students wishing to prepare for the "concours" to become teachers in primary and secondary schools. Basing ourselves mostly on literary texts from the 20th and 21st centuries, we will work on increasing students’ use of translation techniques in both languages, revising vocabulary and grammar points in each language.

Ce cours s’adresse en priorité (mais non exclusivement) aux étudiant.e.s qui désirent préparer les concours de recrutement d’enseignement des premier et deuxième degrés (professorat des écoles et CAPES). Il vise à approfondir les connaissances en techniques de traduction (thème et version) à partir de textes littéraires des XXe et XXIe siècles majoritairement. Chaque cours comportera également des révisions systématiques de notions grammaticales et lexicales dans les deux langues.

  • 3) L3S5 Traduction orale 

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the skills involved in consecutive interpreting. We will work with newsreels or documentary films in British and American English. The method used is based on learning - or revising - advanced techniques in documentation, terminology, comprehension, discourse analysis, decoding, summarizing, note-taking, rereading, and on rallying the skills needed for the task. We will also begin working on conveying oral messages, on oral translation and on the written translation of speeches, systematically developing active and passive forms of vocabulary.

Objectif : Initiation à la traduction consécutive. Support : Journaux télévisés ou documentaires en anglais et en américain. Méthode : apprentissage ou révision de techniques avancées de préparation documentaire et terminologique, compréhension, analyse du discours, décodage, résumé, prise de notes, relecture, mobilisation des ressources ; initiation à la restitution et à la traduction orale, traduction écrite d’une prestation orale, développement systématique du vocabulaire actif et passif.

TRADUCTION : COURS DE SPECIALISATION

 

Cours de spécialisation L2S3 : Documentation en traduction

Based on the translation of documents dealing with specialized topics (such as wine growing, angling, fashion, architecture, medical care, sailing, interior design, etc.), this module aims to introduce second-year students to the techniques of terminology and documentary research in the translation process. 

Nous traduirons, de l’anglais vers le français, des documents variés et parfois assez techniques abordant, par exemple, la pêche à la mouche, la viticulture, le matériel de voile, les soins dentaires, etc. Pour ce faire, nous serons amenés à utiliser de nombreuses ressources disponibles en ligne, telles que des dictionnaires bilingues et unilingues, des glossaires spécialisés, des sites internet spécialisés, des revues et articles scientifiques, des catalogues en ligne…

Cours de spécialisation L2S4 : Traduction en sciences humaines 

This translation course involves going both into English and into French. It will focus on the main topics in humanities, relying on a variety of documents such as newspaper articles, blogs and recent works. We will strive at making translations sound fluent and authentical, stressing errors that need to be avoided with the help of exercises centered on grammar and vocabulary, reflecting on equivalence, synonyms and antonyms. There will be two assessments carried out in class, in the middle and at the end of the term.

L’UE de traduction anglaise – Version, Thème – s’axera sur les principaux domaines des ressources humaines à travers un corpus de documents divers et variés extraits de journaux, de blogs et d’ouvrages récents. Nous veillerons tout particulièrement à la fluidité et l’authenticité d’un texte en langue cible tout en mettant l’accent sur les erreurs et maladresses à éviter impérativement. Les exercices de traduction seront bien sûr à l’honneur, notamment les thèmes grammaticaux mais également le travail sur le vocabulaire en termes d’équivalence, de synonymie et d’antonymie. L’évaluation des étudiants s’effectuera en deux temps. Un partiel de mi-semestre et un examen final en fin de semestre.

  • Cours de spécialisation L3S5 : Traduction littéraire.

In this course, we will translate a variety of literary extracts from English into French, dealing with the problem of register. A stylistic analysis of the source texts will help us determine the registers used and refine traditional categories (such as informal, colloquial, formal) so as to make appropriate choices in French.

Un corpus littéraire diversifié permettra d’aborder la traduction à travers les problèmes de niveau de langue. Une analyse stylistique des textes sources permettra de repérer les registres mis en œuvre et d’affiner les catégories de base traditionnelles (registres familier/ courant/ soutenu), afin d’opérer des choix de traduction pertinents en français.
