This is an initiation course in translation, going into French. Ce cours, le pendant de celui proposé en première année, est une initiation à la pratique de la traduction (français-anglais). À partir d’un corpus de textes appartenant à des domaines variés (littéraire, presse, publicité), on s’efforcera de comprendre la nature des contraintes qu’implique l’acte de traduire. Il s’agira aussi de s’initier aux différents procédés de traduction qui permettent le passage d’une langue à l’autre. Les étudiants auront des exercices de traduction à effectuer chaque semaine.the other. The students will be given translations to do each week.

What does translating for the theater involve ? Why can translating a play be seen as a first instance of its staging ? Translating from English into French and conversely, we will look into the specificity of drama translation, dealing with issues linked to adaptation, historical and cultural allusions, style, and the actors’ bodies and voices. We will mostly be working on scenes from 19th to 21st century plays. Students will be encouraged to go and see at least one translated play in the course of the semester.

 

Comment s’assurer que traduire le théâtre, c’est bien traduire pour le théâtre ? Pourquoi peut-on dire qu’une traduction constitue une première ébauche de mise en scène ? On abordera la spécificité de la traduction théâtrale, avec la question de l’adaptation des allusions historiques et culturelles, des problèmes de style et de prosodie, et ceux de la gestuelle et de la dimension scénique du texte. On travaillera la traduction dans les deux langues, de l’anglais vers le français et inversement, à partir d’extraits de pièces du 19ème au 21ème siècle, pour la plupart. NB : On encouragera les étudiants à aller voir au moins une pièce (jouée en traduction) au cours du semestre.

• L3S5 : Human and Machine Translation : Observation, Analysis and Practice, cours de la majeure, (DL25EM04)

This course will concentrate, first of all, on the analysis of English/French and French/English translations produced by different human translators in order to teach students to identify correspondence between units of translation, different translation strategies and provide them with models to imitate. Moreover, Machine Translation systems such as Google Translate and DeepL, based on Artificial Intelligence, have made such considerable progress in recent years that they are now both omnipresent and incontrovertible in translation practice. Nonetheless, given that translations produced by algorithms still contain many errors, inconsistencies and stylistic shortcomings, students will learn to recognize and correct various types of errors or flaws that commonly occur in Machine Translation. Finally, students will put their knowledge into practice by translating from English to French and vice versa.

A thorough understanding of both English and French is a prerequisite for this course.

 

 

• L3S5 : Traduction (thème/version) : Initiation au sous-titrage, cours de la majeure (DL25EM04)

The purpose of this course is to make you discover various aspects of the subtitling process, while helping you improve your translation skills.

We will work on :

• Documenting and research for translating films
• Transcribing dialogs
• Adapting dialogs for subtitling
• Applying subtitling protocols
• Using subtitling software and programs
• Translating subtitle files
•  Synchronizing subtitle files
• Creating subtitle files
• Subtitling online videos

We will work on exercises dealing with extracts from films, series and animated movies. Students will need to have a personal computer (using Windows or Mac) at home and in class. There will be regular assessments during the semester, and students will be given a final exam on subtitling during the last session.

Les exercices consacrés aux différents aspects du processus de sous-titrage seront évalués régulièrement dans le cadre du contrôle continu ; un exercice récapitulatif de sous-titrage sera proposé en évaluation finale lors de la dernière séance de cours.

Cours de mineure L2S3 : Traduction en sciences humaines (DL23EN01)

This translation course involves going both into English and into French. It will focus on the main topics in humanities, relying on a variety of documents such as newspaper articles, blogs and recent works. We will strive at making translations sound fluent and authentical, stressing errors that need to be avoided with the help of exercises centered on grammar and vocabulary, reflecting on equivalence, synonyms and antonyms. There will be two assessments carried out in class, in the middle and at the end of the term.

 

L’UE de traduction anglaise – Version, Thème – s’axera sur les principaux domaines des ressources humaines à travers un corpus de documents divers et variés extraits de journaux, de blogs et d’ouvrages récents. Nous veillerons tout particulièrement à la fluidité et l’authenticité d’un texte en langue cible tout en mettant l’accent sur les erreurs et maladresses à éviter impérativement. Les exercices de traduction seront bien sûr à l’honneur, notamment les thèmes grammaticaux mais également le travail sur le vocabulaire en termes d’équivalence, de synonymie et d’antonymie. L’évaluation des étudiants s’effectuera en deux temps. Un partiel de mi-semestre et un examen final en fin de semestre.

Cours de mineure L2S4 : Documentation en traduction, cours de la mineure traduction (DL24EN04)

Based on the translation of documents dealing with specialized topics (such as wine growing, angling, fashion, architecture, medical care, sailing, interior design, etc.), this module aims to introduce second-year students to the techniques of terminology and documentary research in the translation process. 

 

Nous traduirons, de l’anglais vers le français, des documents variés et parfois assez techniques abordant, par exemple, la pêche à la mouche, la viticulture, le matériel de voile, les soins dentaires, etc. Pour ce faire, nous serons amenés à utiliser de nombreuses ressources disponibles en ligne, telles que des dictionnaires bilingues et unilingues, des glossaires spécialisés, des sites internet spécialisés, des revues et articles scientifiques, des catalogues en ligne…

 

 

Cours de mineure L2S4 : Techniques de rédaction en langue cible, mineure de traduction (DL24EN03)

The purpose of this course is to hone students’ skills in French so as to enhance the quality of their translations. We will work on style, vocabulary and grammar, aiming at effectiveness, elegance and complexity when writing in French.

 

Ce cours vise à parfaire les connaissances en français afin d’obtenir des traductions de qualité. Style, lexique et grammaire seront travaillés afin d’obtenir un français écrit riche, élégant et solide (ce cours n’est pas un cours de français langue étrangère).

Cours de la mineure L3S5 : Traduction hypermédias, numérique et écriture (DL25EN03)

This course will introduce students to issues related to multimedia translation, with technical translation and localization (i.e. adapting online documents, software, CDRoms to the language and culture of a given country or region) as the two main lines of work. Students will translate web pages, articles related to IT and communication technology but also literary works of hyperfiction.

 

Cet EC propose une initiation aux problématiques spécifiques à la traduction multimedia : traduction technique et localisation (adaptation de documents en ligne, de logiciels, de cédéroms etc. aux conditions linguistiques et culturelles d’un pays ou d’une région donnée) en constitueront les deux axes principaux. Les étudiants seront notamment amenés à traduire des pages Web, des modes d’emploi, des articles de vulgarisation scientifique relatifs aux nouvelles technologies de l’information et de la communication, mais aussi des textes plus littéraires (hyperfictions).

Cours de la mineure L3S5 : Syntaxe comparée (DL25EN04)

Pour les étudiants des mineures : Traduction ; Linguistique ; Enseignement

Ce cours est consacré à l’étude des problèmes linguistiques que pose le passage de l’anglais au français et des différences d’ordre syntaxique entre les deux langues. L’analyse se fera à partir d’extraits de textes traduits et des exercices seront proposés afin de faciliter l’assimilation de ces oppositions. Il porte essentiellement sur l’agencement syntaxique, c’est-à-dire sur les différences dans l’ordre des mots (ré-élaboration, déplacement, re-thématisation, etc) entre les deux langues. On s’interrogera sur les types de structuration caractéristiques de l’une et l’autre langue à travers l’étude de la traduction du passif ainsi que celle des constructions causatives et résultatives qui mettent en jeu les différences de systèmes linguistiques.

Ojectifs : 

• Se familiariser avec les systèmes structuraux et linguistiques propres à chaque langue à travers les procédés de traduction les plus fréquents (équivalence, modulation, transposition, etc)
• Comprendre les enjeux linguistiques de la traduction (anglais/français), savoir mener une analyse linguistique de la traduction (Masters Traduction et Enseignement MEEF, préparation CAPES)

Evaluation :

• 2 devoirs sur table.

Cours de la mineure L3S6 : Diversité des registres, registres de la diversité (DL26EN03)

In this course, we will translate a variety of literary extracts from English into French, dealing with the problem of register. A stylistic analysis of the source texts will help us determine the registers used and refine traditional categories (such as informal, colloquial, formal) so as to make appropriate choices in French.

Un corpus littéraire diversifié permettra d’aborder la traduction à travers les problèmes de niveau de langue. Une analyse stylistique des textes sources permettra de repérer les registres mis en œuvre et d’affiner les catégories de base traditionnelles (registres familier/ courant/ soutenu), afin d’opérer des choix de traduction pertinents en français.

 

 

Cours de la mineure L3S6 : Traduction orale (DL26EN04)

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the skills involved in consecutive interpreting. We will work with newsreels or documentary films in British and American English. The method used is based on learning - or revising - advanced techniques in documentation, terminology, comprehension, discourse analysis, decoding, summarizing, note-taking, rereading, and on rallying the skills needed for the task. We will also begin working on conveying oral messages, on oral translation and on the written translation of speeches, systematically developing active and passive forms of vocabulary.

Objectif : Initiation à la traduction consécutive. Support : Journaux télévisés ou documentaires en anglais et en américain. Méthode : apprentissage ou révision de techniques avancées de préparation documentaire et terminologique, compréhension, analyse du discours, décodage, résumé, prise de notes, relecture, mobilisation des ressources ; initiation à la restitution et à la traduction orale, traduction écrite d’une prestation orale, développement systématique du vocabulaire actif et passif.
